How it started

David started out as a mobile car valeter, which is why there's still a car on the logo. Customers kept asking whether he could do the sofa or the living-room carpet as well, so he trained properly in carpet and upholstery cleaning, and that quickly became the main business. Valeting is still on offer, but carpets, sofas and everything else that gets grubby in a house are what Valiant is about now.

Since then it's been eight years and more than a thousand jobs across Washington, Houghton-le-Spring, Sunderland and the rest of Tyne & Wear, and the training hasn't stopped: fine fabrics, leather cleaning and repair, invisible carpet patching and hard-floor restoration have all been added because customers needed them.

Why one man matters

Being a one-man team isn't a limitation, it's the point. There's no salesman, no "the lads will be round", and no wondering who's coming into your home. David looks at the photo, gives you the price, does the work himself and stands behind it. If something isn't right, he puts it right.
